As Coachella’s sustainability partner, Global Inheritance facilitates the TRASHed Art of Recycling where artists transform ordinary recycling bins into unique and imaginative art pieces. For the second consecutive year, I was selected by to redesign a recycling bin for Coachella 2023 under their Art of Recycling program. My theme, β€œUnderwater Disco,” blended the under the sea and disco trends and included an augmented reality filter component.

Inspired by the vibrant trends of the sea and disco, I chose the theme β€œUnderwater Disco” for my project that would allow me to showcase a nature with a trendy twist. I began by illustrating the concept digitally on Procreate before bringing it to life with acrylic paints. The bin featured a striking 3D element on topβ€”an oyster with a disco ball instead of a pearl. Additionally, I developed an augmented reality feature with Meta Spark, which added a digital layer to the physical artwork. This AR component transformed the user's environment (Coachella) into a techno, metallic underwater scene, allowing festival-goers to engage interactively with the bin by scanning QR codes placed on its sides.

This blend of physical art and digital technology served to promote recycling in an innovative way. By scanning the bin, users could access an AR filter that opened up an immersive environment that extended the physical design. The project was a vivid demonstration of how art and technology can come together to promote sustainability and environmental consciousness at major events.
