Based an a popular comic series, Paper Girls follows 4 paper delivery girls who get caught up in a time travel war the day after Halloween. With creative freedom, I was tasked to create an immersive AR experience on Instagram and TikTok* for the premiere.

I developed the "PG Time Traveler" AR effect, an immersive experience designed to transport users between the two key eras of the seriesβ€”1988 and 2019. Utilizing Meta Spark and Effect House, this filter allowed users to interact with the show's time-travel theme by tapping to switch between a nostalgic VHS-style filter for 1988 and a modern, crisp visual for 2019. The effect was adapted to work both on Instagram, using target tracking to engage with show-related key art, and on TikTok, where I tailored the user experience to start from a UI dashboard reflecting the show's aesthetic.

The main goal was to provide an experience that would be appreciated by long-time fans of the original Paper Girls comic, its story and styling; as well as enjoyed by new fans and general Instagram and TikTok users. The initial phase involved brainstorming and resolving how to effectively convey the series' time-travel theme. We considered various design approaches, such as using distinct visual styles for the years 1988 and 2019 to create a vivid contrast that would engage users. Questions around user interactionβ€”how to make the time transition engaging yet intuitiveβ€”led to the implementation of a simple tap mechanism on Instagram, and a UI dashboard on TikTok, reflecting the series' aesthetic. This dual-platform strategy required meticulous adaptation, ensuring the effect was both captivating and functionally seamless across different user experiences. The project's execution involved extensive testing to refine the visual effects and ensure smooth transitions, ultimately enhancing the viewer's immersion into the "Paper Girls" universe.
